Beethoven's fifth sonata, published in 1801, is among the most popular and frequently played of all violin sonatas. Known as the "Spring Sonata" it contains four movements, one of the first sonatas to do so. The first movement contains one of Beethoven's most glorious themes, the second movement is particularly expressive. The very brief and syncopated Scherzo leads into a substantial Rondo to conclude the work.
