Joseph Haydn
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was an Austrian composer, whose lifetime spanned most of what is termed the classical period.
He is considered the father of the symphony having composed 104 examples through his life, and the same epithet is often applied to the genre of string quartet. Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician, and was a close acquaintance of Mozart. He also taught counterpoint to the young Beethoven having met him in 1790.
