Paul Hindemith wrote Trauermusik as a suite for viola and string orchestra, consisting of four short movements which run consecutively. It was written by the composer in memory of King George V of the United Kingdom, who had died the day before the work's composition in January 1936. Trauermusik simply translates as 'mourning music', and the piece is transcribed here for viola and piano.
