Prokofiev's composed his Flute Sonata Op.94 in 1942, and following year transcribed it for violin and piano at the request of the violinist David Oistrak. This transcription slightly altered the original composition, but has since become the more widely played arrangement for both violin and flute. It is among the most substantial and taxing of all 20th Century flute sonatas,
