Sarasate's 8 Spanish Dances, beginning with his two Op.21 dances, were commissioned by the esteemed publisher Fritz Simrock in 1877, and the first of these was Malaguena which was composed in December of that year. It consists of an ever-increasingly sparkling violin melody over a somewhat more pedestrian accompaniment in the piano part.
