Robert Schumann's first violin sonata was written in 1851, and the first public performance was given by the composer's wife Clara on piano alongside the great violinist Ferdinand David. The first movement is a passionate and intense work, while the second movement is a rather pensive intermezzo in F major. The themes of the third movement undergo canonic treatment, bouncing between the two instruments and leading to an exciting coda.
