Robert Schumann started composing his second violin sonata after expressing displeasure with his first in A minor, however both works have now found a secure place in the core repertoire of many violinists. This sonata was dedicated to Ferdinand David, who premiered the first sonata, however for this work Joseph Joachim played the violin at the first performance, once again with Clara Schumann taking on the substantial and challenging piano part.
