Jean Sibelius composed Valse Triste for small orchestra in 1903, originally as part of his incidental music for a play, however it has become far better known as a stand-alone concert work. It has since been arranged for solo instrument plus piano, most notably for violin by Friedrich Hermann, but transcriptions for viola and cello also exist.
