Franz Schubert composed this violin sonata, sometimes known as the Duo or Grand Duo Sonata, in 1817. It was the fourth violin sonata he wrote, although the three preceeding Op.137 sonatas are now commonly referred to as sonatinas. This sonata exhibits many of Schubert's most attractive qualities, with graceful melodies reminiscent of his songs. The term 'Duo' was only given to the wok after Schubert's death, signifying the dialogue between and equality given to both violin and piano parts through the sonata.
