Richard Strauss composed his cello sonata, Op.6 in 1883, when he was just 19 years old. This was a revision of a sonata he had written two years earlier, with a more assured structure and a completely new finale movement. It was immediately highly acclaimed by Strauss' contemporaries, and has remained a key work in the cello sonata repertoire ever since.
