Richard Strauss composed his first horn concerto in 1882-83, with versions for orchestral and piano accompaniment written at the same time. It is one of Strauss' early works, written in his teenage years, and this is reflected in its youthful energy. It has three movements, which are linked together with bridging passages and played continuously, and it has become one of the most performed horn concertos in the repertoire.
