Richard Strauss' second horn concerto was composed in Vienna in 1942, sixty years after his first concerto for the instrument. The English horn player Dennis Brain was integral to the rise in its popularity and it has become the most recorded horn concerto of the 20th century. The concerto is arranged here for horn and piano, and the outer movements are equally virtuosic and challenging for both instruments. The middle Andante is by contrast a relaxed intermezzo in A-flat major.
