Franz Strauss' beautiful Nocturno for horn and piano was first published in 1864. The piano key of D-flat major sets a peaceful nocturnal scene, a mood which is temporarily broken during a more agitated section in B-flat minor. The initial lyrical horn melody restores calm by the end of the work, which is among the best-loved short solo works for the horn, and is often heard in recitals as a result.
